Pia's christmas present. It quite took me by surprise to learn Pia plays with dolls at daycare, because all she plays with at home are trucks and cars. I had bought her a doll for christmas, and had always intended making her a dolls bed set to go with a bed we bought from Ikea when we first found out we were having a girl, but was unsure whether she'd play with it. She's a very domestic girl - extremely head strong, but loves nothing better than to sweep and tidy away and be a little grown up. I am always so fascinated by the concept that we can shape our children and gender through environmental stimuli - there is actually so much, so very much, which is genetic, and as much as I love seeing her bang a truck around the house, there's a deep part of me that longs to see her play with dolls as well. Maybe she wont play with this in the end, but it will look very pretty against her other furniture!
So I've made/am making: a mattress, dolls quilt, sheet, pillowcase, and blanket. I wanted to make a mini version of this, this, or this. When I'm completely done, I'll show it all.
[Sarah is also doing one for the same Ikea bed.]
What a wonderful idea . . . I can't wait to see the little bed all dressed up

Oh man, I cannot wait to see all this, and I cannot wait until June is into dolls (hopefully someday!)

Yes, social conditioning it's mind bending. She probably sees her peers playing with dolls at childcare.I like seeing my little one tuck in a doll, put her finger to her lips and whisper shhhh! That doll will be tucked in style I bet.

As a friend of mine once said to me,
They come through you, not from you.
Kids are born with such distinctive personalities.

i am always fascinated by the interaction of nature and nurture in wee ones, how and why they choose to play and what this says about the way that they are shaped (and shape). one thing is certain with pia-- she cannot escape growing up with exquisite taste :) xox
